About Calisthenics
Let us introduce ourselves
Calisthenics is uniquely an Australian sport which assists with developing discipline of mind, body, teamwork, a competitive spirit and sense of commitment.
Originating from the ancient Greek words ‘kállos’ (beauty) and ‘sthenos’ (strength) the word Calisthenics was formed and developed into our wonderful sport we now know and love.
Calisthenics is a great way for all participants and coaches to learn the true meaning of teamwork, sportsmanship and have the opportunity to create lifelong friendships.
Our sport encourages members to increase their fitness, flexibility, physical movement, coordination and their self confidence in performing.
With thousands of participants nationwide, Calisthenics incorporates elements of Gymnastics, Dance, Ballet, Apparatus (Rods and Clubs), Marching, Singing and Acting alongside Acrobatic elements.
Calisthenics has a strong focus on deportment and presentation, helping participants to develop confidence in performance and to enjoy the thrill of competing on stage in front of an audience several times a year in a fun, friendly and supportive environment.
Primarily a team sport, Calisthenics nationwide also offers the opportunity for individuals to compete and perform on their own in a Graceful Girl or Solo, or with another team member or participant in a Duo.
The creation of State Teams allows for members to audition to be selected as part of the elite team that then competes annually at a National level representing South Australia at the ACF National Championships held in theatres all over the country.
Our beloved sport of Calisthenics commenced in South Australia in 1928, celebrating 90 years of Calisthenics in South Australia in 2018 the sport has grown and evolved immensely during this time frame.
